Georgia Republicans Caved on the HOPE Scholarship in Exchange For Casinos

In Georgia, House Republicans have cut a deal with House Democrats to gut the HOPE Scholarship in exchange for casinos.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • They are not putting it in writing so they can deny it;
  • The deal was made by leadership;
  • It would turn part of HOPE into a means-tested scholarship dependent on parental income instead of student grades;
  • In exchange, Democrats will vote for the casino amendment to the constitution.

Take action to kill this and get the Governor involved.  Demand he take a position ASAP.

Also, the Senate Rules Committee has stripped police protection from the hate crimes legislation.  You need to go here right now to demand they put it back in.  They are meeting this morning.  Demand they put protection for first responders into the hate crimes legislation.  The juidicary committee added it and the rules committee stripped it.
