As riots and looting continue across the country, the city of Seattle is facing the worst of it: an apparent insurrection against the United States of America. Yes, you heard that right.
Protestors in the largest city of Washington State have formed what they are calling a “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” that has put up its own barricades and signs that read, “You are now leaving the USA” within the 13th precent of the city. After nearly a week of battle between the Seattle Police Department, the National Guard, and activists associated with Antifa and Black Lives Matter, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced that the police would be abandoning the precinct. As Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best explained, “This is an exercise in trust and de-escalation.”
Immediately following this announcement, protestors took the police barricades and repurposed them to form the autonomous zone. The protestors apparently even offered free food and medical care within the zone, along with creating its own garbage disposal system. However, the autonomous zone quickly turned anarchic when some activists within the zone stormed Seattle’s City Hall demanding the mayor’s resignation. Seattle-based rapper Raz Simone took the lead during the anarchy, assaulting protestors who disobeyed his orders, calling himself the police, and hoisting an AK-47 on his arm declaring “war,” apparently on the Seattle Police Department.
Other activist leaders in the autonomous zone on Tuesday presented a list of demands to the city council and the mayor’s office. This list of demands includes things such as the abolition of the police department, reparations for victims of police brutality, giving the right to vote to prisoners, free college, the requirement that only black nurses and doctors take care of black patients, and the removal of all Confederate monuments in Seattle and Washington State.
Within the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, the activists have turned increasingly violent. The previously-mentioned Raz Simone is heavily-armed, and has become a de facto warlord within the zone. As an anonymous source told The Post Millennial, “[Antifa is] bar[ring] media from entering and screen people coming in. They are walking around fully armed. Talking about making their own currency and making their own flag. SPD is talking about abandoning the west precinct now.” Antifa has even started to extort businesses in the area for as much as $500 to receive protection from those within the precinct. According to journalist Andy Ngo, Antifa has even organized a subreddit account providing guidance to activists within the autonomous zone on how to maintain a supply of fresh water, make homemade chemical weapons, and push back on police attempts to disrupt the region.
Leadership in the city of Seattle and in the governor’s mansion in Olympia have gone quiet. Attempts by the police to make contact with Antifa within the zone were rebuffed. However, state leadership appears to be clueless to what is happening. When Governor Jay Inslee was asked by a reporter about the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, he responded: “That’s news to me.” This prompted President Trump to tweet in response, “Radical Left Governor @JayInslee and the Mayor of Seattle are being taunted and played at a level that our great Country has never seen before. Take back your city NOW. If you don’t do it, I will. This is not a game. These ugly Anarchists must be stopped IMMEDIATELY. MOVE FAST!” Later, the president added, “Domestic Terrorists have taken over Seattle, run by Radical Left Democrats, of course. LAW & ORDER!”
What Antifa is doing in Seattle is unacceptable. The actions by those within the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone shows what would happen if progressives got their wish in defunding the police: people like Raz Simone would arise across the country, turning into mini-warlords, creating a situation where the people would start to police themselves. Seattle is setting a dangerous precedent. Let us hope that it does not spread across the country.
