In the latest hot take from the guys over at VICE, Anand Giridharadas claims that Americans are obsessed with freedom even though we are a country founded on slavery. 🙄
We are freedom obsessed to the point that we are always so afraid of the government coming for us that we are blind to other types of threats.
We are threatened by many, many things and what government ultimately does is protect us from those other oppressions that we are quite blind to.
It’s a curious take since the most consistent threat to the human race since the beginning of time IS government itself.
Assuming we are all well aware of the millions upon millions of deaths by the hundreds, if not thousands of tyrannical regimes around the world since the beginning of time, we can move on.
The important point this argument misses is the immeasurable good the private sector does during times of crisis and natural disaster. Consider these headlines:
Billionaire Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai donates ventilators and masks to New York
Tesla donates hundreds of ventilators to New York
Frederick nonprofit donates 27 ventilators to New York during COVID-19 outbreak
None of these were done by a government. These good deads of the private sector are important because of their nimbleness. In one phone call, a CEO can donate masks and ventilators in a way that would take significantly more time for a government agency to approve.
But hey, it’s Vice. What do we expect?
