In Competence War, Trump Destroys Pelosi – and We All Still Lose

This is the fight America deserves right now, isn’t it? In one corner, the narcissistic president obsessed with making every national event about him, and painting every opponent or skeptic as a blithering fool:

In the other corner, the ragingly partisan Speaker of the House consumed with holding and exerting power even if it means screwing over average Americans in the process:

So who wins? Well I suppose that depends on how you measure these things. But politically? Trump will win this one bigly, and here’s why…

If the Democrats are going to attempt to hang the “incompetence” weight around the neck of the president before November, casting Trump as the villain who cost thousands of Americans their lives with his slow, unscientific approach to the spread of coronavirus, the last person they can have as their face is Nancy Pelosi.

Why? Because outside of hapless New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, no national leader was more irresponsible in the early days of this coronavirus pandemic than Pelosi. It was late February, weeks after President Trump put a ban on travel from China, when Pelosi went for a stroll in San Francisco’s Chinatown, attacking the president for engendering animosity towards Asian people.

Without a mask, Pelosi strutted in front of the cameras and actually encouraged people to come join the mass of humanity:

“We do want to say to people ‘Come to Chinatown, here we are — we’re, again, careful, safe — and come join us.’”

Not a good look for someone trying to blame another for dangerous, incompetent leadership. Her attempts to explain it away only make it worse:

Besides that, one reality that Pelosi and her allies seem to ignore is the ever-present disconnect between what the current president says – usually indefensible and ignorant – and what the current president does – in the case of this virus, almost in lock-step with the scientific, medical experts advising him. An attack on the words of the president may land, but an attack on the actions of the president are going to pit them against the very “experts” they claim to trust.

This isn’t a political battle Pelosi and the left is going to win. Just ask Bill Maher.

But supposing you don’t score these kinds of battles politically, supposing you score them by how much better off we become as a country because we fought them, it seems pretty evident who is not going to win this continued charade: us. Ray gets it:
