BREAKING: Jobless Claims Double Last Week’s Record

A record number of Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week with the U.S. weekly initial jobless claims topping 6.64 million. This more than doubles the estimate of 3.1 million and is considered unprecedented by experts across the board.

This report shatters the previous week’s unemployment filings of 3.3 million which was the previous record to date.

It is important to note that these are initial reports and will be followed by revisions.

To put this in perspective, before COVID-19, the two highest weekly jobless claims were 695,000 claims in 1982 and 665,000 claims in March 2009 during the Great Recession.
