Metaphor Alert: Texas Democrats move to a “virtual convention”

In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, Texas Democrats are moving to a “virtual” convention in 2020 the party announced Thursday.

The news was broken on Twitter by the Texas Tribune’s Patrick Svitek:

The announcement of a “virtual” as opposed to a real convention serves as a great metaphor for Texas Democrats.

For years now, the party has been trying to convince the world that it is set to turn the state blue. Yet the closest it has managed was a 2.5 point loss by former Rep. Beto O’Rourke in a run against vulnerable Sen. Ted Cruz in the “blue wave” election year of 2018.

The reality is there will be no real Texas Democratic Party convention in 2020, just as there will be no real “blue Texas” in 2020; there will only be the “virtual reality” of a blue Texas to go with the “virtual” Texas Democratic Party convention.
