House Democrats rushed out a bailout package for COVID-19 that insists on abortion on demand funding and punishing small businesses. That the Trump Administration decided to go along with this is shameful.
Hopefully, Senate Republicans can step in, but I am not hopeful.
In addition to using this COVID-19 situation to spend money on things that are absolutely not related to it, House Democrats are insisting on paid leave. But the Democrats are exempting businesses with more than 500 employees. That puts the massive burden on small businesses that do not have the capacity to do it.
The quarantines and social distancing caused by this virus are going to harm small businesses enough already. To add an extra layer of costs to those businesses is shameful and will see many of our mom and pop stores, restaurants, and other small businesses out of business while Americans are increasingly at the mercy of chains, big box businesses, and the Fortune 500.
It should be no surprise that the Fortune 500 and its lobbyists played a role in shaping this legislation and the President’s Treasury Secretary is way more worried about massive businesses than the little guy. But that’s what we’ve come to expect from Mnuchin.
President Trump seems to deeply connect with individuals and the owners of small businesses. It is sad to see his administration now using a crisis to collaborate with Democrats to run those same small businesses into the ground with federal mandates that don’t apply to big business.
