President Trump Declares Coronavirus Emergency

President Trump officially declared a state of emergency regarding the Coronavirus outbreak this afternoon, saying, “To unleash the full power of the federal government, I am officially declaring a national emergency, two very big words.”

Per CNN, the emergency declaration puts FEMA in charge of the federal response and frees up more federal funds to combat the virus. FEMA can assist in housing and feeding Coronavirus patients.

The president said that 1.4 million test kits would be available within a week and 5 million in a month. He also touted a drive-thru test option. The declaration will also give the government the ability to waive rules on hospital admissions and lengths of stays.
