Senate Rejects Hearing Impeachment Witnesses

Trump supporters prevailed in a 51-49 vote.

The Senate has voted to reject a proposal by Democrats to call witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Trump. The vote was largely along party lines with two Republicans voting to call witnesses. Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah were the sole Republicans to vote “yes” on the measure.

The vote to reject witnesses means that the trial will reach a speedy conclusion. A vote to acquit the president could come as early as tomorrow.

The decision to bar witnesses from testifying is a break with precedent. The Senate has held a total of 15 impeachment trials including two for presidents. The Trump trial will be the first Senate trial to ever be concluded without hearing witnesses per Politifact.
