Doug Collins is In

Congressman Doug Collins announced he is running for the United States Senate against Kelly Loeffler. Collins, in choosing Fox, is cashing in on some of his pro-Trump celebrity for fundraising. Loeffler has over $20 million already, almost all of it her money. Collins needs a fundraising boost.

Collins already has positive name ID with Republicans and Loeffler is an unknown. Collins has an opportunity to define Loeffler before she can define herself, though I suspect he’ll want to make the case positively for himself as the Trump supporting candidate.

Democrats in Georgia, meanwhile, are still in disarray. Collins’ entry, however, gives them time to consolidate behind a single candidate. That would mean two Republicans are on the ballot in November and just one Democrat, boosting the odds of a Democrat pick up.

There will be no primary in Georgia. Though Collins’ allies are trying to create one, Governor Kemp has promised to veto it on the grounds that it would be rewriting election rules after the race has already begun.

While I personally wish he’d have stayed out, Collins is a great guy and his entry will force Loeffler to up her game, which she needs to do anyway. They’ll make each other better candidates.
