Multiple press outlets are claiming John Bolton, President Trump’s former National Security Advisor, has written his memoirs and includes a passage that the President did want to hold up aid to Ukraine to pressure them to investigate Joe Biden.
If true, this is a serious revelation from a serious person. No Republican would want a Democratic President to hold up foreign aid to pressure a country to investigate a political opponent.
I say if true because the media, particularly the New York Times, has a history of rushing these sorts of breathless allegations against the President only to scale them back or walk them back completely. I will treat this cautiously.
It is, however, a reminder that the House Democrats could have subpoenaed John Bolton. They could have asked Bolton the questions. They chose not to. They made up an excuse that the courts would have taken forever. The courts would not have taken forever. They would have expedited the hearings. Democrats chose not to even try.
They should have.
They are now asking the Senate to call witnesses the House could have called and chose not to. One of those is John Bolton. I actually don’t believe the Democrats really want to hear from Bolton because I have a very hard time believing John Bolton would do anything other than sabotage the impeachment trial and give an advantage to the President.
Bolton is a very serious person and a very credible person. I would not mind hearing John Bolton testify. I continue to believe, however, that the House should have taken the time to call him instead of letting him be a wild card in the Senate.
If the allegations made by the New York Times are true, I think John Bolton will need to be called and the Senate should do so.
