Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant and four others have died in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, CA. The crash occurred around 10:00 PDT this morning.
All five people on the helicopter were killed – including Bryant’s 13-year old daughter Gianna, and the FAA reports that the crash occurred under “unknown circumstances.” Details are still developing, and plenty of unconfirmed reports are floating around social media and other outlets.
The crash took place one day after LeBron James surpassed Bryant for third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Bryant congratulated James on Twitter last night.
Bryant was an 18-time NBA all-star who signed as a pro directly out of high school in 1996. He was the youngest player in NBA history at the time. He retired in 2016, scoring 60 points in his final game.
In the years in between, Bryant won five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, along with two gold medals in Olympic basketball. He ranks number one among Lakers players in points scored, steals, assists, three-point shots, and games played. He also won the NBA’s MVP award once and was twice named MVP of the finals.
Pray for Bryant’s family and loved ones.
