As the Democratic race for the White House draws closer to its agonizing conclusion, the infighting between candidates is heating up. This time, it’s Elizabeth Warren going after the Bernie Sanders campaign. Warren claims that the campaign has distributed talking points to volunteers with the purpose of painting her as an elite candidate.
NBC News reports:
“I was disappointed to hear that Bernie is sending his volunteers out to trash me,” she told NBC News. “Bernie knows me and has known me for a long time. He knows who I am, where I come from, what I have worked on and fought for and the coalition and grassroots movement we are trying to build. Democrats want to win in 2020 we all saw the impact of the factionalism in 2016 and we can’t have a repeat of that.”
Warren added that Democrats “need to unite our party.”
Warren is referring to a memo that has circulated among Bernie’s volunteers that instructs them to refer to her as a candidate of elite voters who isn’t adding new converts to the party. The memo exists, so at least Warren appears to be telling the truth on this one.
For his part, Sanders lays the blame at the feet of his campaign staff.
“Elizabeth Warren is a very good friend of mine, we have worked together in the Senate for years, Elizabeth Warren and I will continue to work together, we will debate the issues, no one is gonna trash Elizabeth Warren,” he said, adding that his campaign has “hundreds of employees” and “people sometimes say things that they shouldn’t.”
Sanders pointed to his past remarks, saying he’s never said a bad word about Warren.
“We have over 500 people on our campaign. People do certain things, I’m sure that in Elizabeth’s campaign, people do certain things as well,” Sanders added. “But you heard me for months, I have never said a negative word about Elizabeth Warren who is a friend of mine. We have differences on issues, that’s what campaigning is about. But no one is gonna be attacking Elizabeth.”
As far as I know, the Democrats don’t have a version of Reagan’s 11th commandment, so maybe all bets are off with this crowd. But here’s the thing: this entire crop of Democrats – with the possible exception of Tulsi Gabbard – has gone so far to the left that its target audience is basically coastal, godless, hipster, lily-white millennial left-wingers. None of them are terribly exciting to anybody but the party faithful.
At the end of the day, Warren can gripe about Democratic unity all she wants, but it’s a race to the finish. Sanders and every other candidate are going for broke as the campaign heads into its final stretch. If she wants to break through, complaining ain’t going to help.
