On the night of the missile strike that killed Iranian
general Suleimani, I noticed a couple conservative commentators that I follow
on Twitter remark that if it proved to be true, the decision to take him out
probably re-elected Trump in 2020.
I always find those kinds of predictions to be more
conversation-starters than reliable analysis. Remember, many were saying on the
night of the bin Laden raid that Obama’s re-election was far more of a foregone
conclusion than it ended up being. There is a lot that will happen between now
and November, after all.
Still, I’m beginning to think that it might prove to be the
killing of Suleimani that does end up convincing many fence-sitting Americans
weary of Trump’s petulance, but unconvinced that Democrats are offering any
better option, to decide the crazy you know is better than the crazy you don’t.
Because even if average Americans aren’t bouncing off the
walls with excitement over the death of the Iranian general, most understand he
was a bad guy who killed our soldiers and contractors for a living. The
reaction they expect to see from their political leaders then would be a
unified celebration of the victory, even if it comes with a measured concern
about potential consequences.
To her credit, Elizabeth Warren appeared to try to do just
that. And then she was berated into backtracking by her party:
It’s almost as if the left is intentionally trying to
convince America that Trump is a more reliable option. Remember, this is the
same political movement that once celebrated paying Iran. Imagine the average American fence sitter trying to
make sense of what Ben Shapiro notes:
Leading Republican party officials aren’t ignorant of this
buffoonishness on the left. Senator Ted Cruz has signaled his intent to
circulate a resolution commending the Trump administration for the strike.
Wisely, he is modeling it after the 2011 resolution that unanimously passed
commending the Obama administration for the raid that killed bin Laden. If
Democrats oppose it, think what that will say heading into November.
If the strike does re-elect Trump it’s only because the
Democrats forgot they were Americans first.
