Jen Gunter should stick to what she’s good at…and it isn’t medicine

Simply based on what I’ve seen of her commentaries and online sloganeering, I would have never believed you if you’d have told me that Dr. Jen Gunter was an actual medical doctor. Even if you said it with a straight face. And to be completely candid, even after seeing her credentials online – including a medical degree from the University of Manitoba and OB/GYN training at the University of Western Ontario – I’m still not sure I totally buy it.

After all, forget being a highly trained medical professional, I don’t know how it is possible for someone who has passed 8th grade science to say something as logically unsound as this:

“A fetus in not a baby. A fetus is not an unborn or a preborn baby or child. If your goal is to legislate medical care you have to use medical terminology. I will f***ing call you out each and every time.”

Man, that just isn’t bright.

First of all, I can’t say that I would ever be overly concerned with someone who appears to be nothing more than an online abortion zealot boasting a medical license “calling me out.” I’d be surprised if anyone elected to a state or federal legislative post would lose too much sleep over it either.

Secondly, while this semantics game is unbecoming of politicians, it’s both unprofessional and embarrassing for the scientifically-inclined. Fetus is a term derived from the Latin “fētus” which translates to “offspring.” You know, like the English terms baby or child. But beyond that, what exactly is Gunter’s point?

Perhaps she’s implying that a “fetus” is not really a human. If that’s the case, whatwould she say a fetus is? And where would this silly game cease? An “infant” is not technically a “child.” And a “child” isn’t technically an “adolescent.” And an “adolescent” isn’t technically an “adult.” So, can we arbitrarily declare that one term is more human than another, or that one isn’t human at all?

Terms like adolescent, infant, and adult don’t refer to non-humans. They refer to humans at particular stages of development. You know what other term doesn’t refer to a non-human, but a human at a particular stage of development? Fetus. And just to help Dr. Jen and her posse out, that applies to the terms “embryo” and “zygote” as well.

But perhaps the most interesting part of this whole episode is Gunter’s “demand” that we use official “medical terminology.” If that’s the case, shouldn’t Gunter be willing to do the same? And that would mean she should stop using a catch-all colloquial term like “abortion” for what she advocates. Dr. Jen Gunter is a proponent of feticide, or the more common iteration of the word, “fetal homicide.”

Appealing to medical science never ends well for fetal homicide activists. That’s why Dr. Jen Gunter should stick to online trolling and fundraising for feticide factories, and leave the science to those who practice it.
