In Kentucky, Governor Matt Bevin lost to a Democrat. No Republican Governor of Kentucky has ever won re-election. Democrats have rushed to make this about Bevin, but consider Bevin was at 30% approval and, after Trump’s visit, got within striking distance of victory tonight. This really was not about Trump.
Kentucky Republicans swept all the other statewide races. Kentucky elected its first black Attorney General, who also happens to be Kentucky’s first Republican Attorney General since 1948.
Let me tell you a little story about the Bevin Administration. I like Matt Bevin tremendously and actually supported him when he ran against Mitch McConnell for the Senate. In 2018, I invited Matt Bevin to speak at the Resurgent Gathering. He was actually the first person to accept. We advertised he would be there. But as the event drew near, the Bevin Administration reached out and said he could not actually attend unless we chartered a private jet to fly him there and back. We had to cancel ads and redo the agenda, etc. because we could not, at the last minute, afford that.
I have heard very similar stories from many people. None blame the Governor himself, but those around him. Personnel is policy and that generated problematic policies for the Governor.
He’s a good man, but his tenure in office was deeply problematic. There is no reason to blame Donald Trump, particularly when the rest of the GOP mopped up in Kentucky.
