This Is Bad

The President's press conference justifying his actions in Syria and his letter to Turkey's president may scratch the itch of the bro-conservative movement, but his actions are actually setting the United States on a terrible path that will create more endless wars, not end them. The US presence in Syria was actually stabilizing. In fact, that is why we have troops around the world. We are not engaged in war per se, but in keeping wars from spreading. The President has, these past few weeks, been deeply contradictory. He first said he'd let Turkey and the rest kill each other, then said he wasn't authorizing Turkey to go do what it did, and is now at "well they're doing it and we aren't a part of it." Except we are a part of it and will have to increasingly be part of it.Contrary to the President's statements, Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Syria are not going to go kill ISIS for us. They are perfectly fine to let ISIS go destabilize Iraq in a way that some future American President will have to clean up.And that's the point.

The President’s press conference justifying his actions in Syria and his letter to Turkey’s president may scratch the itch of the bro-conservative movement, but his actions are actually setting the United States on a terrible path that will create more endless wars, not end them.

The US presence in Syria was actually stabilizing. In fact, that is why we have troops around the world. We are not engaged in war per se, but in keeping wars from spreading.

The President has, these past few weeks, been deeply contradictory. He first said he’d let Turkey and the rest kill each other, then said he wasn’t authorizing Turkey to go do what it did, and is now at “well they’re doing it and we aren’t a part of it.” Except we are a part of it and will have to increasingly be part of it.

Contrary to the President’s statements, Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Syria are not going to go kill ISIS for us. They are perfectly fine to let ISIS go destabilize Iraq in a way that some future American President will have to clean up.

And that’s the point.

The President has united the Congress against him and is only saved by lacking two-thirds of both houses set against him even if a majority is as well as serving as Commander in Chief where he can just make orders. He has angered the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee who would play a key role in any impeachment trial against him. He has angered our allies. He has even angered many of his top generals and soldiers in the field.

On top of that, he has set up a situation for further Middle Eastern chaos and also set up Russia to play clean up and woo our allies away from us.

The only winners here are, in fact, ISIS and Russia with side benefit to Iran.

It is hard to see how the President could be putting the United States in a worse long term position in the Middle East than if he was actually doing the bidding of our enemies, which I don’t believe.

Bro-conservatism loves it because they love the chaos and don’t care about the long term consequences. They love that Trump is making all the right people mad. They love that he is pulling troops out of the Middle East. Except he isn’t. They are just being relocated further south. We are now having to fire on our own bases to keep the Russians from them. We are adding troops to Saudi Arabia. This was deeply destabilizing and will have long term ramifications that will either work against us or require us to spend both money and blood to steer things back in our direction.

President Trump made a screwed up situation even worse.
