I think Guy Benson is right.
If Barack Obama handed his foreign policy to an outside lawyer who bought conspiracy theories he’d heard on MSNBC talk shows and had his chief of staff go through parsing over what was or was not a quid pro quo and sent the next G-7 summit to a property he owned and had to send his Vice President to get the Turks to stop an invasion he let happen the GOP would be in histrionics right now demanding impeachment.
And yes, as Guy also noted, much of the media would be defending every bit of it.
But just because the media would defend it if a Democrat did it does not mean you or me should be defending it because Donald Trump is doing it.
This stuff is not good. The G-7 summit alone is ridiculous. Of all the places in America to have it, it just happens to wind up at a property owned by the President? If the facility is going to comp the conference, then absolutely do it. If it is going to give a huge discount and the President can have it there because he can get a better deal than Sea Island, absolutely and thank you Mr. President. But I think at first blush if a Democrat were doing this we’d all be outraged and understandably so.
I actually don’t think the Mulvaney press conference was bad in and of itself. I think Mulvaney was right that this sort of stuff happens and it was good to hear him say they interpreted the law as being able hold up an appropriation, but still required to disburse it in the fiscal year. That was actually good. But also, the President has maintained there was no quid pro quo and that the money was not held up for any reason other than generally making sure corruption was being taken seriously.
Mulvaney saying the 2016 investigation related to the hold up contradicts the President and that’s bad. It hurt the President’s position.
The Turkish situation is farcical and never should have happened. Russia is a winner and Israel is a loser in this.
Insulting General Mattis was the kicker. The man is a real war hero and highly respected. He has also been very loyal in retirement keeping his mouth shut. Blowing up about him was amateur hour.
This has been a really bad week for the Trump Administration. I just am not partisan enough to excuse it all away.
