I know a lot of you who don’t like Trump are disappointed, given what you are seeing, that a lot of Republicans are not coming out for impeachment. Let me make a few points and you can feel free to disagree with them, but let me explain what is happening behind the scenes and why you are not seeing a rush of Republicans denouncing the President.
The media has done this bombshell, tipping point, turning point, today’s the day routine for three years and nothing has actually happened. What has happened is some major stories got retracted or tweaked. So a lot of Republicans are unwilling to jump on out into the line of fire when there actually are good odds some of this stuff gets revised, retracted, amended, or otherwise is seen in a different light.
On top of that, Democrats haven’t begun an impeachment proceeding. They’re still on a fishing expedition and clearly have taken two months to shape the narrative, the roll out, etc. Look at the screams when Republicans pointed out it was coordinated only for it to be coordinated. This is also why you can’t convince many of us that Schiff did not help draft it. Scream about that all you want, but it is a plausible theory despite his denials.
Now look at the call with the Chinese where Trump mentioned Warren. Do we have that transcript yet? Given how so much has been twisted by the press in the last 3 years, you’ll have to excuse people for wanting to see the transcript first.
Then there are his voters. If everyone rushes out and screams impeach, it’s just going to ratify to the voters that Republicans would rather believe the lying liars in the press than the facts. See above for why voters might be suspicious. In your unchanged outraged from 2016 and demand that people rush out now before more is known, you’re just ensuring they never do. You’re helping make it look like a partisan witch hunt. You’re fueling the narrative that causes them to circle the wagons.
Frankly, that is something you need to consider. A lot of people think this is more of that. You haven’t changed your mind and you expect them to, but they’re looking at you thinking you’re shaping a narrative to make it as bad as possible. Yes, I know you think it really is that bad, but every time these non-political voters come up to see what’s happening, you’re still singing the same song. You are outraged. You want the President impeached. But you’ve been outraged and wanted the President ousted since day one. They don’t believe you’re actually giving sober minded analysis. They think you’re just grasping at the next straw.
Now let me tell you what is happening behind the scenes in Congress. The GOP is waiting for the Democrats to begin impeachment. They have no reason to help the Democrats go forward when it is clear the Democrats have wanted this since November 2016. Once it goes forward though, if the facts are there, you’ll start to see movement away from the President from some of the 19 Republicans already leaving. They’ll then help the Democrats shape a bipartisan narrative. That bipartisan narrative will build Articles of Impeachment designed to persuade senators. There is no reason for a single one of them to step into the fire of the President’s tweets so long as the Democrats are not actually impeaching him.
The Senators, right now, would not vote to convict. Let this marinate in an impeachment investigation that is run properly and you may see some concerns. There are real concerns by some surprising members of the House and Senate. The China phone call bothers many of them. The withholding of money to Ukraine and why is going to be a big deal. The conversations right now in offices, the Capitol Hill Club, etc. are all based on hypotheticals, but those hypotheticals are based on some clearly shaping up scenarios and some of the hypotheticals are not all resolving well for the President. More importantly, if what you think is going to come out does come out, you may actually see the GOP try to convince the President to leave.
You may not get two-thirds of the Senate to convict. But you’d get a majority of the Senate to vote for impeachment and that would cause all sorts of problems and persuade some of the 70,000 voters minimum who Trump relied on in 2016 to stay home. You might also get a couple of Republicans behind the scenes who help persuade some to vote for impeachment while they themselves vote against it because they’re up for re-election this year. Bitch about that all you want, but don’t deny impeachment is political and these guys are worried about their own elections. But, for now, all this daily and hourly handwringing does nothing but serve the purpose of fueling the narrative that you don’t really care, you just want to impeach.
You may think you’re paying attention and so have come to conclusions justifying impeachment. But the voters aren’t paying attention. WE ARE ONLY TWO FREAKING WEEKS INTO THIS AND THE LAST TIME THEY PAID ATTENTION YOU WERE CALLING FOR TRUMP’S OUSTER THEN TOO. To many of those people, it looks like you are crying wolf. Again. So stop the hand-wringing about the “Republicans” you once respected, etc. I assure you they are having the conversations you want them to have behind closed doors and more than one is glad Romney got on out there. It would help your cause tremendously if the Democrats did do a select committee of sane Democrats not let by Schiff. The coordination issues undermine his credibility. Optics matter here too. Lastly, if you’re one of the Republicans who wants the President gone, going after Pence right now just signals that you’ll never be happy so there’s no reason to listen to you.
