Impeachment as a Panic Move

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the degenerate state of our politics these days largely comes down to two things: One, the people running the show aren’t nearly as smart as they would have you believe. In fact, they’re really not that smart at all, with most of our elected officials in Washington spending their time either fundraising or campaigning, having outsourced the actual policy making to their staffs and to the K Street lobbyists who keep their skids nice and greased.

Two, perhaps even more pernicious, is the sad fact that most of what we see coming out of DC amounts to little more than theater. It’s a show put on for the voters, whom the political class increasingly see as easily-distracted rubes, that quickly moves on from one act to the next, mostly to keep the country in a constant state of agitation. Anybody remember less than two weeks ago, when #ImpeachKavanaugh was the hot trending topic? Yeah, neither does anybody in Washington—or the media wing of the Democrat Party, who rebooted that bit of nonsense and then just as quickly closed up shop when Greta Thunberg did her Village of the Damned routine. Now we’re back to impeachment again—this time with Donald Trump in the crosshairs—with poor Greta left to wonder, Norma Desmond-style, where the audience has gone.

So what’s got the Dems on the impeachment bandwagon for the umpteenth time? Does it really matter? Why should it, when they can barely be bothered to even rewrite the script from Russiagate? The difference, of course, is that even Hollywood knows better than to make a sequel to the biggest box office bomb in history—but then the Democrats, between their screaming base and the lingering sadz from the Mueller debacle, have never been able to move past their failure to boot the Orange Man from office, not after they got this close. And so they’ve now pinned their hopes on some phone call Trump made to the president of Ukraine, during which the Democrats contend he made some quid pro quo over some whatzit or another, and now for sure they’ve got him dead to rights.

News flash, fellas: normal people don’t care about the arcana of Ukrainian politics, which means they sure as hell don’t want the President impeached over it. According to the polls, they don’t want him impeached at all. Quite the opposite, Trump is actually enjoying some of the highest approval ratings of his presidency—and even if those aren’t spectacular, they put him ahead of Barack Obama at the same spot in his tenure. That’s pretty incredible, considering the fawning press that Obama got—and the near universal negative coverage Trump gets.

But still the Democrats are pressing ahead, turning the impeachment process into a temper tantrum and a thinly-disguised attempt at placating their rabid base. The question is, how much damage is that inflicting on the nation as a result? Sure, we’ve been polarized for a long time—but just how badly have Democrats corrupted our institutions in their dogged pursuit of the Orange Whale? By now, it’s increasingly clear that the Obama administration abused its powers with the law enforcement and intelligence communities to spy on the Trump campaign. Trump himself fired James Comey, after the FBI director illegally leaked information in an attempt to damage Trump and get a special counsel appointed to investigate the President. And now we have this whistleblower—apparently a member of the intelligence community who has direct ties to a man who worked for the same person who helped secure the FISA warrants against Carter Page—who has violated every protocol in the book in order to create a pretext for impeachment.

Fred Fleitz, a former intelligence officer, spelled out the very dangerous repercussions this could have in a stark Twitter thread:

If the President can’t trust the discretion of his own intelligence community, what does that do to his ability to make critical decisions?

That’s why this whole crusade to get rid of Trump goes beyond mere politics. It is creating a situation in which this country and its citizens are being put in real danger.

Do Democrats realize this? Certainly some of them do, but they will proceed nonetheless. Why? That’s a matter of speculation—but it wouldn’t surprise me if this was all a panic move to head off an even greater scandal soon to follow. In a short time, the Inspector General’s report into possible FISA abuses during the 2016 campaign is expected to be released—and it could very well contain information that points to widespread corruption in Barack Obama’s Department of Justice and FBI. Some of that report may also pertain to Ukraine, which allegedly leaked information in order to help Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

If that is indeed the case, you can expect this show to get even crazier.
