For a show host who covers “Reliable Sources,” Brian Stelter went a bridge too far on Sunday and CNN either needs to make him apologize or needs to discipline him. This is too much for a network that prides itself in being fair and objective.
First, Stelter decided it was appropriate and relevant to bring on people to discuss, as experts, the President’s mental state even though they have never diagnosed the President.
Then, when one psychiatrist disagreed it was relevant and then insisted President Trump had perhaps killed more people than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, Stelter only interrupted the man to insist talking about the President’s sanity was appropriate.
Yes, the guest on the show said it was not helpful to talk about the President’s sanity then suggested Trump had possibly killed more than Hitler, Stalin, or Mao.
He didn’t rebuke the man, but instead challenged the man that yes we should talk about the President’s sanity.
Seriously, you can see the video, but check this out:
FRANCES: Calling Trump crazy hides the fact that we’re crazy for having elected him and even crazier for allowing his crazy policies to persist. Trump is as destructive a perp in this century as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao in the last century. He may be responsible for many more million deaths than they were. He needs to be contained but he needs to be contained by attacking his policies, not his person. It’s crazy for us to be destroying the climate our children will live in. It’s crazy to be giving tax cuts to the rich that will add trillions of dollars to the debt our children will have to pay. It’s crazy to be destroying our democracy by claiming that the press and the courts of the enemy of the people. We have to face these policies not Trump’s person. It’s absolutely impossible, you can bet the house that the Congress that paints that the cabinet will never ever remove Trump on grounds of mental unfitness. That will never happen. Discussing the issue in psychological name-calling terms distracts us from getting out to vote —“
STELTER interrupting: But I’m not talking about name calling. I’m talking about asking questions that are really uncomfortable. Not saying we have the answers, I’m saying we need to bring it up.
If this had happened on Fox News, Stelter would be demanding exactly what I am demanding and then would chronicle the host going on a “previously scheduled vacation.”
It is perhaps time for Stelter to go on a previously scheduled vacation. This was grossly irresponsible, particularly for a show that calls itself “Reliable Sources.”
Shame on the network for letting this stand.
UPDATED: The guest has a history of suggesting Trump is worse than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. This is not some new thing. Also, Stelter had previously suggested he wasn’t questioning the President’s mental state and now openly is. Stelter says he did not hear the comment because of a technical issue. Okay, I guess, but again, the person has a history of making these comparisons.
And before you say Stelter is lying about this, I have experienced this too — also experienced getting blown up for not responding to something on CNN when, in fact, the IFB had cut out. Nonetheless, the conversation was inappropriate altogether, was not based on reliable sources as the people have not examined the President, and contained a guest who has repeatedly made the same claims about the President compared to Hitler as he did today.
