Local news reports that at least 18 people have died in an active shooter attack on an El Paso Walmart. Initially, there were reports of multiple shooters, but the Texas Tribune is reporting that the area is secure and that only one shooter is in custody at this time.
The shooting took place in the Cielo Vista Mall area on the east side of El Paso near I-10 and began about 10 a.m. local time. SWAT teams and armored vehicles sealed off the area and police are advising people to stay away as searches are still underway.
Surveillance camera pictures posted on KTSM depicted a white man in khakis and a dark shirt who was wearing ear protection and holding a rifle that appeared to be an AK-47. Police were reported to be searching a late-model car near the scene.
The shooter has not been identified but an online manifesto purported to be penned by the shooter has surfaced. The manifesto, which has not been authenticated, cites anti-immigrant motives for the attack.
