Reparations is the latest craze by leftwing hucksters, charlatans, and grifts to prey on the vulnerable. Having spent fifty years screwing up black America while trying to improve it, the political left as heirs to the Great Society and New Deal, have presided over the collapse of black families, the collapse of public schools, and the gentrification of black neighborhoods by progressive, white hipsters. They now want to give up and just throw some money at the problem and wash their hands of it.
Reparations is the demand of the pseudo-intellectual who has given up and wants to cash out. It is the idea of huckster and conman making promises that’ll never be delivered premised on the idea that throwing money at a problem will make it better. It is the idea of the charlatan who claims some heroic, helping role and gets rich quick through shakedowns at everyone else’s expense.
NBC News has entered the fray on the side of the hucksters, scammers, conmen, and charlatans of the left with a denunciation of Senator Mitch McConnell for his great-great-grandfathers owning fourteen slaves in Alabama in the 1850s.
The details about McConnell’s ancestors, discovered by NBC News through a search of ancestry and census records, came in the wake of recent hearings on reparations before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. Asked about the reparations issue, McConnell, R-Ky., said he was opposed to the idea, arguing it would be hard to figure out whom to compensate.
The implication here is that McConnell somehow benefited from his great-great-grandfathers’ slaves and he must therefore pay reparations and is damned if he does not.
Slavery experts have stressed that descendants of slave owners should not be held personally responsible for the deeds of their forebears. But they have also argued that the families that descended from slave owners, like McConnell’s, are likely to have benefited from the labor of slaves that propped up farm families in earlier generations — a point made by many reparations supporters, who have said that descendants of slaves were never compensated for the economic benefit their forebears made to white families.
In other words, experts say McConnell cannot be held responsible for his forebearers, but NBC News thinks he should be held responsible for his forebearers.
There literally is no journalistic or newsworthy purpose for this article except to apply pressure on McConnell to not block slave reparations legislation. There is none. As the article itself notes,
Louis Cain, professor emeritus at Loyola University Chicago and an expert on the economics of slavery, said more Americans have been stained by slavery than they realize. “I suspect with the mobility of the American population in the 20th and 21st centuries, most of us have ancestors that owned slaves, including many individuals who did not arrive until well after the Civil War,“ Cain said. “The responsibility for what happened was collective, not individual.”
This completely undermines the purpose of the article. If the responsibility is collective, singling out McConnell is ridiculous, but that’s exactly what NBC News is doing because it is not reporting news. It is working to advance the hucksters’ reparations agenda.
It’s a shameful and ridiculous news story and NBC News should apologize for it. This is not journalism. It is agenda pushing and agenda pushing of the worst variety — a public policy of limited public support advanced by people who collaborated in advancing welfare oriented policies that ultimately harmed the black community. Those people now want to wash their hands of the mess they helped create by throwing money at the people dealing with the societal fallout of the Great Society and its successively terrible welfare state policies.
