Eric Swallwell, the California congressman who once remarked he wanted to nuke his opponents, is expected to be the first Democrat candidate to bow out of the 2020 primary race.
Swallwell is scheduled to hold a press conference at 1pm PT / 4pm ET today on the future of his candidacy. Many are speculating he’ll be the first candidate to bow out.
As the tweet notes, Swallwell had cancelled a planned campaign swing through New Hampshire scheduled for the holiday weekend.
He had so much potential…especially polling at 0%.
The candidate, who made his main rallying point gun confiscation, wasn’t garnering much attention in the polls or in the hearts and minds of Democrat voters. Despite his plea to former Vice President Joe Biden to “pass the torch” to younger Democrats like him, his request went unanswered and thus, he’s likely bowing out.
Washington Post’s Dave Weigel notes many declared candidates in the Democrat primary will be out by September since they aren’t expected to meet the threshold to qualify for fall debates.
This blog will be updated accordingly if/when Swallwell confirms he’s bowing out.
As of 4:24pm ET, Swallwell dropped out of the 2020 race.
