Ocasio-Cortez Says The Entire Border Patrol is a ‘Violent Culture’

There is a “secret” Facebook group with 9,500 members, set up for current and former Customs and Border Protection employees. In this group, some members engaged in rather bad online behavior.

Bad behavior and inappropriate memes on Facebook? I’m shocked!

Based on this, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has painted the entire CBP–which has 60,000 employees– as “a violent culture.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has been trumpeting the narrative that our borders are concentration camps, and that CBP is the equivalent of Nazi camp guards for months. She’s toured some of the facilities, which as a Member of Congress it is her right and duty to do. As these federal employees do their jobs, she makes sure they are all painted with an evil brush.

Look at the way she conflates having her phone “confiscated”–to enforce privacy laws–with what members of a Facebook group posted online. And she wrote “they were all armed”–more for her protection than to intimidate. Of course they’re armed.

The fact is that we don’t know who is in that Facebook “secret” group. We don’t know if the 9,500 members consist of a few thousand actual federal employees, or if it’s mostly trolls somehow invited or accounts hijacked by Russians.

There is every argument that, yes, any active CBP agents discussing anything from bad jokes to threats against a sitting Congresswoman are indeed “bad eggs.” The union representing CBP employees is right to respond to Ocasio-Cortez’s accusations.

The union representing Border Patrol employees, the National Border Patrol Council, issued a statement saying that the Facebook group is “not representative of our employees and does a great disservice to all Border Patrol agents, the overwhelming majority of whom perform their duties admirably.”

ProPublica’s reporting, the union said, “cited a handful of people who posted inappropriate content out of 9,500 members of the Facebook group, not all of whom are active active duty agents.”

It’s Facebook: what does the government want done about it? There are bad eggs in every Facebook group with more than five members.

Yet here is a Member of Congress saying that the entire CBP is corrupt, and the media dutifully nodding in agreement. When President Trump said the FBI leadership was corrupt, you’d think he had committed treason and permanently damaged the fabric of our republic from the way the press and the Democrats responded. But AOC can accuse 60,000 federal employees of being in a “violent culture” and the media immediately rushes to show how she’s right.

Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for enormous government programs like the “Green New Deal.” Does she think these things would be done by some magical class of government employee, where there would be no “secret” Facebook groups threatening polluters? I wonder if there’s not already some “secret” EPA group posting memes about Republicans? I would bet a month’s salary ProPublica isn’t putting any reporters on assignment looking for it.

Calling out an entire agency of the federal government as Nazis, whose employees have already been threatened with doxxing by an op-ed published in the New York Times, is dangerous and stupid. I would like to expect more from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who occasionally shows signs of intelligence.

It’s up to Congress to fix our border crisis, that just a few months ago Democrats were calling “phony.” Hopefully, Ocasio-Cortez will do more than just preen for a fawning press, and promote dangerous narratives that put federal employees at risk.
