Democrats seem way more invested in actually trying to pin the blame on Donald Trump for the conditions in the detention facilities at the border than on actually fixing the problem. Have you seen the video circulating of lawyers arguing about the conditions in various facilities? That comes from a lawsuit about Obama Administration era facilities. You’d never know that from the press coverage.
Democrats and Republicans could pass legislation tomorrow with funding to improve the conditions in those facilities, but there seems to be no interest in doing so. Democrats like the photo ops and calls of “concentration camps” as a way to hurt the President politically. Republicans don’t want to clean up the mess in the facilities without also funding more border security. While understandable, it is silly given the immediate need.
President Trump did not cause this problem and those blaming the President instead of trying to improve the situation are showing themselves to be partisan hacks.
The Trump Administration should immediately allow in charitable relief to help improve the situation. The Southern Baptists’ mission board is doing the best it can, but it is limited in what it is permitted to do. The Red Cross is in a similar situation.
The President should allow in charitable relief immediately.
Democrats and Republicans should pass expanded funding to improve the detention facilities within the week.
And then we really should secure the border. The situation has gotten worse because of a flood of people seeking asylum. Even the New York Times is willing to recognize there is a crisis now at the border. Democrats, however, have withheld funding.
It’s time to fund improvements and it is time to let in private charitable relief. This is a bipartisan problem and it started under a previous administration. The name game and blame game suggests partisans are not really interested in a solution so long as they can inflame people over the issue.
But this needs to be fixed.
