Democrats love to say that all the racist Democrats became Republicans, except today they’re out tearing down Joe Biden as a pro-segregation Democrat who works with other segregationist Democrats in the Senate. Well, except on MSNBC, where more than one person has claimed these Democrats were Republicans.
(As an aside, it tells you everything you need to know about MSNBC that elected Democrats were called Republicans)
This whole thing is rather ludicrous except it is a reminder of all the short term thinking parts of the Democratic Party are engaged in right now.
They’ve spent a few years vilifying Donald Trump as a racist supported by racists and now they are doing the same to Joe Biden. The odds are still in Biden’s favor that he will be the nominee.
So when the time comes to begin vilifying Donald Trump again, many of these same people heaping racist and segregationist invective at Biden will be forced to either admit they were not serious or were wrong, which destroys their credibility, or take a different position. “Biden may be a pro-segregation racist, but he’s not as bad as Trump.” Yeah, that’s the ticket.
James Carville and Paul Begala once co-wrote a book on running for office. One of their pieces of advice was to never do things to win a primary that cost you the general election. The goal is to win the general election. Joe Biden is already running as if he is the Democrats’ nominee. That might actually hurt him in the primary. But these foolish attacks on Biden as a racist, segregation enabler will really come back to bite the Democrats if Biden is the nominee.
It’ll work wonders on mobilizing millennials to come out and vote for the Democrats’ racist grandpa instead of the Republicans’ racist grandpa.
