Dear conservative friends,
You have, in just the past few years, pointed out that James Hodgkinson was emboldened to attempt a mass assassination of Republicans based on left-wing rhetoric. An unstable man heard Democrats blame Republicans for a host of ills and decided to take up arms to kill those Republicans.
This came after Floyd Lee Corkins did the same for many of the same reasons.
And we know there are unstable elements on the right as well who would do the same. So what have you done?
You’ve turned a private American citizen named David French into the source of all that plagues the right. You’ve accused him of and appropriated his name to a cause, in many cases by grossly misrepresenting his views and mischaracterizing him.
David French is now accused of a host of problems on the right and also of being a champion of compromise and surrender to the left — something that any reasonable and fair person would know is not true. Just last night, the man who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the pro-life community in and out of court was accused of being emblematic of a culture that would accept expansive euthanasia laws in this country.
I have to think, given the gleeful pile on, that most of you don’t actually care and have moved past the original debate into score settling. But in so doing, I think you are irresponsibly playing with fire.
Not a one of you stopped to think about turning David French into the cause you want to campaign against. Not a single one of you thought about the nuts who could be inspired to take up your cause for you and frankly, I think a few of you will either not care or dismiss out of hand the fact that it could happen. I have had nuts show up on my front porch because of stuff like this. I bet not one of you have so you don’t care and you won’t care until someone gets hurt.
This pile on against David French is more Lord of the Flies than principled. It is unseemly of a people who claim they want to debate ideas to single out a private citizen and set him up as the Judas Goat. It is stark raving stupidity to attribute to French things that are not true as you claim to be fighting for truth and to show a complete and total ignorance of the man and his life’s work.
And frankly, a whole hell of a lot of you seem completely ignorant of the fact that while you were on Twitter trolling others, he was in Iraq fighting for his country. He has a Bronze Star and you’ve got a bruised ego. He left the private sector to serve his country in Iraq and most of his critics and a great man of his friends know no violence beyond their fingers banging aggressively on their keyboards.
At this point, you guys are no better than the idiot from the Daily Beast trying to ruin some guy from the Bronx. You’ve made it about David, not the issues.
It is gross and unseemly. There’s a debate to be had on the parameters set out originally by Sohrab Ahmari. He makes some tremendously good points with which I agree, even if I would align myself more with David.
But it was a mistake to make it about David French or lend his name to the derision. And the pile on by others with grievances, grudges, and jealousies against David makes the whole thing unserious and harmful to the conversation, if not to the actual physical human being you are all piling on.
But you don’t care because it feels good to be part of a tribe digitally beating someone up.
