HBO has a mini-series about Chernobyl out. The author Stephen King stupidly said it reminded him of Donald Trump. The reality is the Chernobyl system should remind us all that totalitarian regimes are terrible things and the socialist schemes of the left will get us on that path pretty quickly to our downfall.
There is one morality tale within that we should pay attention to.
Multiple people let the disaster run amok because they were afraid to deliver truthful bad news. Things could have been done to mitigate the situation if timely data had been delivered, but people were afraid of being harmed or killed by the Soviets for speaking up.
As a result, the situation deteriorated.
Are those of us who plan on voting for Trump in 2020 allowed to point out that things are not going well?
The President lost the popular vote in 2016 to Hillary Clinton. He won because about 70,000 voters in three states in the midwest that Clinton ignored wound up giving him the Electoral College.
In 2018, those states registered near presidential level turnout and decisively swung those states to the Democrats.
Likewise, while the President has completely locked in social conservative support, fiscal free-market conservatives are not scared of Joe Biden and really hate tariffs. The GOP, long seen as the party of business, risks a pro-business voter retreat to Biden as part of a center-left coalition. These voters long turned a blind eye to social conservatives curtailing abortion rights because they thought they could make more money with the GOP. They’ll turn a blind eye to extremes within the Democratic Party convincing themselves Biden and a Republican Senate would restrain those impulses.
Now, with tariffs etc., Biden is looking like a stable, known play for these business minded voters.
In short, the GOP won in 2016 because Hillary Clinton was on the ballot for the Democrats. She was well known and deeply hated and ran a terrible campaign. If Joe Biden is the Democrat candidate this time, Team Trump won’t be able to define Biden because Biden is well known, not hated, and won’t make Clinton’s mistakes.
You can talk up the economy all you want and think that’ll be a shield, but the Dow has not been doing well these past six weeks and tariffs with Mexico and China risk disrupting a very good Trump credited economy. Just as he has taken credit for the good turn, he will be blamed for the bad.
The President’s team needs to try to find some way to build loyalty with these business oriented Republicans because they’re wobbly and there are way more of them than there are people like me.
