Don’t you know the Left is the arbiter of what is right?
The recent abortion bill signed into law in Alabama has initiated
the meltdown of thousands of leftists, including the freshman Democrats in the
House. While celebrities Tweet from their ivory towers about being pro-choice, Representative
Ilhan Omar (D-MN) decided to take her hate road show to the floor of Congress.
Using the confusing guise of “women’s reproductive rights”, Omar attacked conservatives and people of faith in states such as Alabama, Missouri, and Georgia because they dared to limit abortions.
According to Rep. Omar, religious fundamentalists are twisting
state laws around to protect the unborn, calling new abortion restrictions “horrifying
attacks” on women’s rights. She also went on to accuse the religious right of
But because it’s happening here with the support of the ultra-conservative religious right, we call it religious freedom,” Omar continued. “Let’s just be honest, for the religious Right this isn’t simply about their care or concern for life. If they cared about or were concerned about children, they would be concerned about the children that are being detained and those that are dying in camps across our borders, or the children who are languishing in hunger and facing homelessness.
Now, I’m not sure why Rep. Omar felt the need to attack the
citizens who supported these laws. There is a correlation between the
sentiments of Alabama citizens and the ability of a state government to put
them into law. Perhaps Omar doesn’t understand federalism, and the fact that
states have the right to enact their own laws, regardless of the opinions of a
representative from a state thousands of miles away.
Omar is also wrong that the Right is hypocritical on its
pro-life argument. We care deeply for those children being used to illegally
cross the border. We care deeply that children in our country are facing hunger
and loss of home. I would argue that conservative organizations, and the very
religious institutions that Rep. Omar despises, do more to combat these very
problems than the vitriol that is being spewed about abortion restrictions.
This is yet another example of Democratic and progressive elites
deigning themselves the arbiter of what is right to what they perceive as
backward rubes in states like Alabama. What they forget is that the voices in
those states will not be silenced. They have a will of their own and will
express it in their own state, regardless of what a freshman representative
from Minnesota thinks.
