A Chinese company has set up shop in House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s congressional district and now McCarthy is blocking bipartisan legislation favored by the Trump Administration that would have harmed the Chinese government’s business interests.
What is so troubling is that the legislation McCarthy blocked is legislation that would curtail China’s ability to invest in and build American infrastructure. The Chinese are not only notorious for sub-par work on these sorts of things, but also of using their position in these situations to spy on other nations.
It is one reason the Trump Administration has blocked Chinese efforts to build the 5G network in the United States — a network China could easily infiltrate if it builds the network.
McCarthy, however, now has constituent interests in the form of a Chinese company whose owner is a donor to McCarthy. As the Washington Post notes the company is backed by the Chinese government.
BYD Motors is a division of BYD Co., a giant Chinese manufacturer. Among other things, it makes electric buses that are often used by local governments. Stella Li, BYD Motors president, is a campaign contributor to McCarthy, and the lawmaker spoke at a ribbon-cutting for BYD’s California plant in 2017.
The Washington Post notes that a BYD official denied the company is controlled by the Chinese government and also noted “that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway owns a stake in the firm.” But a Chinese company headquartered in communist China cannot escape the control of the Chinese government. That’s just a fact.
Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-Mich.) said BYD has received $338 million in grants from the Chinese government, and three of its five board members are connected to the Chinese government in some way.
The Chinese have figured out, to our detriment, how to game our political system for their benefit and Kevin McCarthy sure seems to be a useful idiot for them.
