This is not the Onion. It is WAMU, a public broadcasting station in Washington, DC that wants its reporters to stop calling babies, babies, even though any OB/GYN in the country is going to call the baby a baby while in utero.
The term “unborn” implies that there is a baby inside a pregnant woman, not a fetus. Babies are not babies until they are born. They’re fetuses. Incorrectly calling a fetus a “baby” or “the unborn” is part of the strategy used by antiabortion groups to shift language/legality/public opinion. Use “unborn” only when referring to the title of the bill (and after President Bush signs it, the Unborn Victims of Violence Law). Or qualify the use of “unborn” by saying “what anti-abortion groups call the ‘unborn’ victims of violence.” The most neutral language to refer to the death of a fetus during a crime is “fetal homicide.”
Got that? Calling the “fetus” a baby is “part of the strategy used by antiabortion groups to shift language” as opposed to calling the baby a “fetus.” Oh good grief.
If a woman goes to the doctor for a check up while pregnant, the doctor is not going to call the living human being in her stomach a fetus. How do I know? Because my wife has had two of them and each time we went to the doctor he referred to them as babies.
This is just another example of bias in the media. They are willfully insisting certain phrases be used while claiming the other side’s terminology, which happens to be the common terminology used by everyone, is somehow a strategy.
Just ridiculous, but not at all surprising. Also
It is acceptable to use the phrase “anti-abortion rights,” but do not use the term “pro-abortion rights”.
It is also acceptable to use the phrase “pro-abortion National Public Radio.”
