Tariffs Remain a Bad Idea

While there are plenty of policies this administration has put forward that I agree with, I vehemently disagree with the tariff policy and think it will long term be harmful to our economy.

The United States imposing tariffs on China may prop up a few ailing sectors of our domestic economy, but over all harm the economy. The prices of basic goods like a can of beer to a home appliance like a washing machine will go up. Farmers will be hurt causing another expensive farm bailout. This is not good policy.

Yes, China has behaved badly and yes there are things we need to do to fight the problem, but we can fight through other means than tariffs, including through the World Trade Organization, etc.

Unfortunately, the initial premise of this fight is wrong. A trade deficit is not necessarily a bad thing and this administration seems to not understand what a trade deficit is. We have admirable jobs numbers and economic growth numbers right now and an escalation of this fight hurts all of that. It is not a good policy and should be reconsidered.
