Biden is my favorite Democrat. He and his wife really are very kind people who have done a great deal behind the scenes to help others, often people they did not know. They have spent a tremendous amount of time working with wounded soldiers, caring for their families. Joe and Jill Biden have never contributed a lot of money to charity and have been attacked for it. But they have probably put in more sweat equity to personal charitable causes than all the other candidates combined. I suspect we will start hearing about those stories.
Biden, however, is 76 years old. It is pretty telling that a seventy-six year old, who’d be 78 if elected, is going to have to swoop in to save the Democrats from themselves and also that he may not be able to do it because he is too moderate for the base.
Biden could give Donald Trump a real run for his money. They both understand and connect with blue collar workers who feel left behind. But, Donald Trump can play it right in that these workers fled Obama to Trump. Biden wants them to come back to the folks who left them behind.
The Democratic primary is going to get interesting now. Biden has a very long record and it is the record of a man whose positions changed over time. We are going to have to relive some of the big political fights of history.
Make no mistake, however, Biden was Obama’s Vice President. That matters. Biden, like every Vice President who runs for President, will serve as a proxy for Obama’s legacy. That might help him, but a young, vocal set of Democrats think Obama himself was too moderate.
As the Democrats have embraced the insanity of intersectionalism, Biden’s path forward will be determined in large party by how far that insanity has spread through the party’s core voters.
