The Media’s Disgusting Obsession With Porn

Linked on Drudge Report is an article in the Daily Mail about some new sex club that opened up in Los Angeles. I won’t link to it here.

It seems like such articles are now a regular feature in the media. One outlet will run an article about a sex club, then another will run an article about a celebrity sex tape, and many major outlets now cover the porn industry as if it’s no big thing.

When Fifty Shades of Gray took off, the media lapped it up. As far as I know, basically zero major media outlets stopped to say “you know, this is insane, glorifies the objectification of women, and is not appropriate for kids” before covering the books and movies. The same could be said of media coverage of other pornified, sexualized content that’s out there floating in the slime.

On the one hand, the media is responding to a sharp increase in the acceptance of porn within the culture at large. This is undoubtedly true.

Yet, the issue is multifaceted.

While it’s true that the media is, in some sense, responding to the increase in porn acceptance in the culture at large, that’s not the entire picture.

It could also be argued (and I would) that the media’s glorification of porn is itself part of the problem. Our culture becomes more pornified and the media laps it up, but then puts that message into an echo chamber where even more young minds can be exposed to it.

All of this poses many problems for parents, who already face a huge task in keeping the sick and twisted minds of porn producers from corrupting the innocence of childhood.

But let’s be really honest: it also affects how people relate to one another, generally. Porn does not help people to treat one another with actual love, nor be caring and loving towards one another in relationships and marriages. It’s all about self-satisfaction.

A recent study said that in a given week, nearly half of adult males in the US will look at pornography. Other studies have shown that pornography affects the brain and changes neural pathways to need ever-more extreme versions of porn. And porn addiction is a real and growing problem.

Porn is not good for society, regardless of the media narratives that normalizes it.

Which is why Christians should do everything possible to not only steer clear of the many pornified products of our wicked culture, but also to help those they have influence over. This first means their own kids, whose smart devices make a world of iniquity just a tap away.

In Galatians 5:19-24, the Apostle Paul writes:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Notice how Paul specifically calls our sins against the body, and ends with a call for us to “crucify the flesh with its passions and desires.” Wow!

The fruits of pornography are all bad. There is no good at all. And it would be far more obvious, if the cultural narrative around porn wasn’t how “normal” and “acceptable” it is. No, it’s not.

It disfigures human sexuality, and it is wrong, and it is – may I be so bold? – evil. Call it what it is, folks.

For how, otherwise, can one explain why, when Osama bin Laden was killed, the brave American soldiers who carried out that operation found enormous amounts of pornography in his hideout.

Coincidence? No. No it wasn’t.
