Last November, Ben Shapiro documented how the New York Times admitted they don’t cover hate crimes against Jews in New York City, though “[h]ate crimes against Jews have outnumbered hate crimes targeted at transgender people by a factor of 20.” The reason? There’s no common political or social reason Jews are attacked.
In fact, it is the varied backgrounds of people who commit hate crimes in the city that make combating and talking about anti-Semitism in New York much harder….bias stemming from longstanding ethnic tensions in the city presents complexities that many liberals have chosen simply to ignore….“Is It Safe to Be Jewish in New York?” New York Times, Oct 31, 2018
What is it about Jews that makes them a target for the far-right and the far-left? What is it that makes both the intersectional left, Rep. Ilhan Omar and her constituents who were born in Somalia, Louis Farrakhan, and David Duke, the KKK, Richard Spencer and the neo-Nazis all focus on the Jews?
Most people don’t want to know. But the Jews are a problem.
Jews have been a problem for millennia. If you subscribe to the Bible, Genesis relates how the first Jews were a problem for Sodom and Gomorrah, when angels had to get Lot out of town fast. There is quite a bit of historicity to the story that the Jews were a problem for Egypt, whether you believe the Biblical story of Joseph or not.
There is abundant history that the Kingdom of Israel existed, that it warred with other tribes and nations such as the Philistines (and all the other “ites” mentioned in the Bible). There is overwhelming evidence of a Jewish presence in the Levant for thousands of years.
The Jews have been a problem for the Middle Eastern world since antiquity, and with every expulsion, they’ve taken the problem with them. In captivity in ancient Babylon, in the Persian Empire, the Seleucid, Parthian, and Sasanian empires of Iran, then spread around the Roman Empire, Jews have always been marked, and like many ancient civilizations, should have simply assimilated into an intellectual exercise for historians.
But they didn’t. Neither did Jews grow by conquest, like Islam. Neither did they grow by having political power, like Christendom.
No, they remained small yet visible. A problem for every conquerer or government, because in the end, Jews refused to assimilate. They refused to engage in open war. They refused all attempts at being co-opted or converted. (Martin Luther notably tried and failed, leading him to write very bitter things about Jews late in his life; knowing these libels would be used by tyrants for centuries, I believe he would repudiate those writings were he here to see their effect.)
Today, Jews remain a problem, and most people don’t ask why because they really don’t want to know the answer.
They cite Israel. But to the secular, political left, Israel should be like heaven. It’s more socialist than America has ever been. In fact, Golda Meir, one of the signers of Israel’s Declaration of Independence–and one of two American citizens who signed–was a lifelong socialist. Israel is one of the most LGBT-friendly places in the world. Education is free to all and provided by the government. In 2012, Israel was named the second most educated country in the world, by the OECD. Pre-kindergarten education is free from age 3. Gun ownership is all but forbidden in Israel.
But Israel is the Jewish homeland, so that’s a problem.
There are about 15 million Jews in the world, about 0.2% of the world population. For such a small group, Jews are very visible.
Jews have won 20% of all Nobel prizes, with an astonishing 41% in economics and 26% in physics. This means that Jews have a 100-fold impact on the world in fields considered to be important by Nobel standards. In economics, Jews have a 200-fold impact, which is pretty evident if you look at Hollywood and Wall Street. This is really a statistical impossibility, not just an outlier, but a singular case which in any scientific study would necessitate investigation of a cause. The typical causes offered up by those who believe Jews are just another ethnic group, emphasis on education, cultural values of thrift and hard work, and preferences for helping other Jews, hold no water. The same values can be attributed to other cultures whose impact is statistically in line with the world’s population.
So what is it? What can explain such a statistical impossibility?
Could it be that the Jewish people are imbued with a special quality of excellence? Does the world want to admit that? If it’s true, then what is behind it? Could it be that the Biblical promises are true?
But nobody wants to admit that, because that would mean that the Jews are truly a light to the nations; a chosen people; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. It would mean that the people who the Bible claims the bloodline of Jesus Christ are more than just one more ethnic group in the world.
Every recorded event wherever Jews are present since written history existed points to this. But nobody wants to ask the question. Instead, they throw out polemics like what Resurgent colleague Matthew Monforton noted:
“Is it possible to write honestly about the Israel lobby’s power in D.C. without using any anti-Semitic ‘tropes’ at all?” That’s the question self-described conservative Andrew Sullivan asked this weekend in the Intelligencer. Talk of the “Israel lobby” didn’t just pop up out of nowhere, of course, but was injected into the nation’s discourse by what Sullivan acknowledges as anti-Semitic tropes recently used by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).
Sullivan uses a trope of his own, and a patently false at that: “many of [the Israel lobby’s] supporters are Evangelical Protestants who want to accelerate the Second Coming.” No prominent believer in Christian eschatology thinks anyone can or should attempt to accelerate Jesus’ return. Quite the contrary – the Lord’s tarrying means more time to evangelize a fallen world.
It’s not that Evangelical Protestants want to immanentize the eschaton, it’s that Biblical Christians recognize that the enemy of God’s people–the devil–knows how Jews figure into God’s plan and therefore oppose the plans of the devil.
The devil’s biggest lie is “there is no devil.” The second biggest lie is to gaslight the world that Jews are not so special. But God thwarts that lie over and over again. It will be harder and harder to not believe the truth about Jew hatred as time presses on.
The truth is that Jew hatred is so universal, so enduring, and so recurrent a theme in history and in the present, because it’s inspired by a universal, enduring and recurrent force in the world. A heavenly spirit once known as Lucifer, more commonly known as Satan.
And Satan is pleased when the world doesn’t believe he exists, because then the world can continue to search for the answer to the problem of the Jews while simultaneously blaming the Jews for the problem.
