Hey Olympics, Here’s Why You Can’t Have Nice Things

In case you hadn’t heard already, the 2024 Olympics will take place in Paris. While the games are more than five years away, the International Olympic Committee is working on determining which sports will take place in Paris.

Once again, baseball and softball – popular sports that the IOC seems to have hated for a long time – are out. So is karate. Athletes will compete in all three sports in Tokyo next year, but not in Paris. (Squash, chess, and snooker didn’t make the cut for 2024 either – sorry to fans of those sports.)

The IOC won’t make its final decision until December 2020, but you may not believe what events might make their way in the games in Paris. The Paris 2024 committee is going to lobby for three sports that are getting a trial run in Tokyo. Surfing, climbing, and skateboarding are on Paris 2024’s potentials list for the games. These choices kind of make sense when you consider that snowboarding is a popular event in the Winter Olympics.

But here’s the kicker – breakdancing is on Paris 2024’s radar. Let that sink in. Breakdancing.

Needless to say, not everyone is convinced. Take former world number one squash player Nick Matthew. You may blame his opinion on sour grapes over squash getting squashed, but he thought the breakdancing decision was a surprise:

We knew skateboarding, surfing were ahead of us in the last games … but, obviously, breakdancing is the new one.

It seems like it’s come a little bit from left field, sort of wasn’t mentioned in previous bits. So, good luck to them. They’ve obviously been doing something right.

It’s very exciting to watch —  but, you know, so is squash.

Sure, breakdancing is fun to watch, but is it really a sport? Sure, they have that ridiculous ice dancing in the Winter Olympics, but I think that breakdancing is a bit of a stretch.

How long before video games become an Olympic event? After all, colleges are beginning to form video game – I mean, esports – teams. It wouldn’t surprise me if we start to see an esports push at the IOC.

Hey Olympics, this is why you can’t have nice things.
