Did Amy Klobuchar Just Torpedo Her Campaign?

Last night, CNN gave Democratic Presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar a whole hour of airtime for a town hall meeting. But she may have made a statement that will ruin her – at least among the young, hip Socialist crowd. When asked by a recent college graduate if she supported free college for all like Bernie Sanders, Klobuchar gave a surprising answer:

I am not for free four-year college for all, no. … [I]f I was a magic genie and could give that to everyone and we could afford it, I would.  I’m just trying to find a mix of incentives and make sure kids that are in need — that’s why I talked about expanding Pell Grants — can go to college.”

Wow, that ‘s a pretty stunning admission for a Democratic candidate to make. Moderator Don Lemon reminded her that she was actually ON A COLLEGE CAMPUS for this town hall! Instead of backing down, she replied “I know that. But I have to tell the truth.”

Instead of pelting her with rocks and driving her off the set, the crowd applauded. But will applause translate to votes? Can a moderate promoting reality compete against Sanders and Elizabeth Warren with their “free stuff for everybody and tax the rich to pay for it” message?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. The primaries are still a year away.
