Don’t Compare the Suffragettes to the Klan

In 1917, Alice Paul was arrested for carrying a banner quoting Woodrow Wilson while protesting for women’s suffrage. She was jailed, beaten, and force fed eggs when she staged a hunger strike. Dora Lewis was knocked unconscious against an iron bed. Lucy Burns was chained in a cell with her arms over her head. So, when you read about women “being given” the right to vote or “earning” the right to vote, be clear on just what these women suffered just so that we could be allowed to cast our votes.

On Tuesday night, the Democratic women of the House of Representatives chose to wear white in honor of the suffragettes. You don’t have to agree with their political affiliation to appreciate the gesture. Frankly, I wish the Republican women had joined them.

But some people saw the sea of white outfits as an opportunity for ridicule. Several noted Trump fluffers like Katrina Pierson Tweeted out “the only thing missing was the white hoods.” Someone thought that was so hysterical that they photoshopped in the image of Klansmen sitting in the gallery.

Yeah, cause that’s just frickin’ hilarious. The women who were beaten and jailed for the right to vote are just like the cowards that burned crosses and lynched black men.

Honestly, the sight of that photoshopped image appearing in my newsfeed made my blood boil. It was almost enough to turn me into a Democrat again (but then they brought up the whole infanticide issue and that urge went away.)

I get it. The decision by the Democrats to wear white was a cheap political stunt. The fact that the only thing they stood and cheered for during Tuesday night’s speech spoke volumes. But President Trump was gracious enough to honor them during his State of the Union speech. Why are so many of his supporters determined to squash his generosity?

Do I even need to point out that the Republican party is virtually hemorrhaging women voters? In 2016, 53% of white women voted for Trump. In 2018, only 49% of white women voted for Republicans in House races. Would you like to drive that number even lower? Do you REALLY want to piss off the largest voting block in the country?

Then by all means, keep posting crap like this. You know how much you hate it when people make Hitler references about Trump? Apply that here. When you compare women in Congress or suffrage fighters to white hooded terrorists, it’s not the Democrats that look bad.
