Until Public Outrage Built, the New York Times Tried to Do Damage Control for Virginia Democrats

“Dark makeup” is not how anyone ever described blackface. But the New York Times went into damage control mode today to try to help Virginia Democrats.

They pushed out a story about the Virginia Attorney General. The reporters who wrote the story used the term “blackface,” but the headline writers choose to go with “dark makeup.”

Public outrage ensued with even other reporters calling out the New York Times for doing that. So they had to fix the story.

But, before fixing the story, the New York Times made sure to blast it out as a push notification to smartphones with the less damaging headline suggesting the problem was “dark makeup.”

They did a disservice to their reporters and to their readers by acting as damage control, yet again, for Democrats.
