As a long time Atlanta area resident, I can’t for the life of me imagine why our elected officials are so eager to welcome another Super Bowl. It’s not as if our city ever handles large sporting events well. The Olympics were an international disaster marred by incompetence and terrorism. The last time we had a Super Bowl, a snow storm hit. Two people were murdered. Then we were forced to endure the Ray Lewis trial.
Atlanta is already ground zero for sex trafficking. Rescue networks have been preparing for 2 years to respond to the uptick expected from next week’s Super Bowl.
As the government shutdown drags out, there’s concern that the world’s busiest airport may snarl due to TSA workers going unpaid. A Marta train in route to the airport derailed last week and couldn’t be cleared for 24 hours.
So naturally, I’ve been wondering what fresh hell would be in store for us as the Super Bowl returns next week. Today, we get THIS news:
According to the AJC, what nationalists have planned a rally next Saturday at Stone Mountain park, despite being denied a permit.
“To hell with their permit. The Constitution is our permit,” said Michael Weaver, a white nationalist activist and one of the organizers for the rally planned for Feb. 2. “We move forward. We aren’t going to be discriminated against because you don’t like our views.”
The last time this same group staged a “white power” rally at the park, a small handful of actual white supremacists showed up to march and were met with hundreds of protesters. Police were forced to close the park. With the Super Bowl in town, there may not be enough police to protect the white power people from the counter groups that are already rallying to oppose them.
Stone Mountain holds a special place in the hearts of racists since it was the birthplace of the modern Klan. When I was in high school, the Klan still had rallies out there. But they had pretty much died out until recent years. Now they’re back as white power protests have once again cropped up, with disastrous results as seen in Charlottesville.
Another motive for them to hit Stone Mountain has been the call from certain civil rights groups to remove the Confederate carving from the mountain. Weaver commented that “There are a lot of white Americans who are sick and tired of having our monuments taken down. There are a lot of white Americans who are pretty frustrated.”
Yeah, a lot of us white Americans are pretty frustrated that cretins like him keep crawling out from under their rocks and making the rest of us look bad. Personally, I was planning on avoiding everything inside the perimeter for the next week while the Super Bowl circus is in town. I just feel bad for all of my old neighbors in Stone Mountain who have to deal with this whole crazy racist sideshow again.
At least the next few Super Bowls have already been scheduled for other cities. I’ll bet they don’t have these issues in Miami next year.
