Nathan Phillips Did Not Serve in Vietnam Despite Claims to the Contrary

At one time he talked about coming back to the United States and how he was treated, but it turns out Nathan Phillips never actually fought in Vietnam. An enterprising person obtained Phillips’ DD-214 and it appears Mr. Phillips never actually left the United States.

Phillips seemed to suggest to the Washington Post that he had served in Vietnam. The Post has since had to correct that. But back in 2008, Indian Country Today reported, “Phillips … described coming back to the U.S. as a veteran of the Vietnam era. “People called me a baby killer and a hippie girl spit on me.”
