Nathan Phillips confronts students at the March for Life in an event mischaracterized by the American political press.
This video of a group of MAGA-hat-wearing teenage boys apparently mocking a Native American in traditional garb beating a drum has gone viral on social media.
CNN, the Washington Post and others have promoted this, and put the Vietnam veteran drummer’s face on their networks to tell his story. “It was getting ugly,” he said.
The drummer was Nathan Phillips, described as “an elder with the Omaha tribe.” While I don’t know much about Phillips himself, the video and his story seemed to fall apart when the students who were present responded.
“They forced their way into the center of our group. We initially thought this was a cultural dfisplay since he was beating along to our cheers and so we clapped to the beat,” wrote a student from Covington Catholic. The student included links to videos backing up his version of events.
He also claimed that their group was “assaulted by four o five African-American men who called us ‘faggots’ and berated one of our African-American students for being friends with us.” Again, video for backup. ((One of the Youtube videos linked has since been removed.)
So what are we to think? The video seems to tell a different tale than the man who told his story to the mainstream media. But the mainstream media isn’t showing that part of the story.
“It was getting ugly, and I was thinking: ‘I’ve got to find myself an exit out of this situation and finish my song at the Lincoln Memorial,’ ” Phillips recalled. “I started going that way, and that guy in the hat stood in my way and we were at an impasse. He just blocked my way and wouldn’t allow me to retreat.”
In fact, the Washington Post’s headline is intentionally misleading in light of the response and video from students–the headline reads “‘It was getting ugly’: Native American drummer speaks on the MAGA-hat-wearing teens who surrounded him.”
Who surrounded who?
This seems to be just one more piece of manufactured outrage the media puts out to rally themselves. This is also why a large majority of Americans don’t trust the media to tell the (whole) truth.
