Speculation is that President Trump will announce a trade to reopen the government: preserving DACA for his $5.8 billion wall funding.
The legislation would contain a version of the so-called Bridge Act, which protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, also known as “Dreamers.” The stalemate over funding for the border wall has resulted in a partial government shutdown that’s now in its 29th day.Niels Lesniewski, Roll Call, Jan 19, 2019
Democrats should take the deal. While under President Obama, DACA greatly increased the flow of migrants coming into the U.S. through our southern border, this deal would send a message that the U.S. welcomes genuine immigrants fleeing crime and poverty, while also beefing up border security.
A wall, plus additional Border Patrol assets and immigration judges, will have a positive effect at keeping illegal immigrants from crossing into the U.S. The status of illegal immigrants in the country is an issue that genuine xenophobes and blood-and-soil nationalists care about, but most Americans favor a path to citizenship for those already here.
(Don’t believe that? Just Google “most Americans favor path to citizenship.”)
President Trump will make a statement today outlining an offer, and I for one hope he makes this offer.
“I think it will be an important statement, having to do with — as you know, caravans are coming up, they have a big one coming up now. I’m disappointed that Mexico is not stopping them. I mean, Mexico seems unfortunately powerless to stop them,” the president said. “Many got through, they broke through the Mexican area, where, in theory, they were guarded, and they weren’t so well guarded.”
This shutdown can be solved and it should be solved. As time goes on, Democrats will lose the optics war, and Trump will continue to humiliate them. Meanwhile, 800,000 government employees will continue to suffer, while Democrats and the media will appear to be a bit too eager to rejoice in their suffering.
This is no longer the opportunity the left thought they had to defeat Trump. Now it’s just mean-spirited and petty (on both sides, frankly).
If Trump offers DACA for the wall funding, Democrats should take the deal and Republicans should not sink it. It’s time to end this shutdown.
