BuzzFeed has a story out that Michael Cohen told the Mueller investigators that President Trump himself instructed Cohen to lie to Congress and helped shape the lies.
If this is true, President Trump has committed an impeachable offense. You can read the story here, but I would tread cautiously for a number of reasons.
First, you have a series of reporters rushing into the breach to find the evidence with which to impeach the President. They want to be the next Woodward and Bernstein and it has tripped up more than a few reporters. Consider the McClatchy story about Cohen going to Prague that literally no other news outlet can corroborate and Cohen himself has repeatedly denied, even after pleading guilty.
Second, consider this bit:
The special counsel’s office learned about Trump’s directive for Cohen to lie to Congress through interviews with multiple witnesses from the Trump Organization and internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents. Cohen then acknowledged those instructions during his interviews with that office.
Now see this tweet from the Senior Editorial Producer for ABC News, John Santucci:
Now consider that just last week Lanny Davis confirmed that Michael Cohen talked to people in the White House about his testimony, but is declining to address these Buzzfeed allegations.
It sounds more like Cohen talked to someone other than the President — perhaps a different Trump.
No other media outlets are confirming the BuzzFeed story yet. If others come forward, the veracity of the story becomes more concrete. But like the McClatchy stories on Prague, Buzzfeed already ran with the pee tape stuff and is so far the only one out able to corroborate this. That is typically a bothersome sign.
If the Buzzfeed story is true, kudos to them and the Buzzfeed News team. They just helped bring down a presidency. Let’s just wait and see. Michael Cohen is going to testify before Congress soon, so we won’t have long to wait.
Let’s also admit something — the story is very plausible.
