Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis Stepping Down

The latest Cabinet change hits the White House.

To make a turbulent week in Washington D.C. even more chaotic, Donald Trump announced the “retirement” of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, effective as of the end of February.

I placed the word retirement in quotes above, because Mattis actually resigned, he didn’t retire. The time frame for his departure was chosen by Mattis himself to allow Trump the time to find a suitable replacement and allow a smooth transition.

According to his resignation letter, the out-going Defense Secretary told Trump that the President has “the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects” after expressing his belief in the importance of strengthening America’s international alliances, treating allies with respect, and maintaining international order.

Though this letter does not address it directly, this resignation follows one day after Trump’s announced withdraw from Syria.
