American Christian: “Greatness” is a Slave Driver. Just be Good.

Don't let the desire to be "great" enslave your ability to be good.

“Find God’s perfect will for your life.”

“You’re special.”

“You’re going to do great things one day.”

“You’re going to change the world.”

“God has big plans for your life.”

“Don’t miss out on God’s best for you.”

If you grew up in the American Church, some or all of the above statements are probably burned into your memory forever. From as far back as I can remember, I’ve been told by well-meaning preachers, pastors, friends, loved ones, teachers, and mentors that God has huge plans for my life, so I have to do was find out what they are, not screw up, and surely I’ll change the world one day in a big way. And if you’re still reading, I’m willing to bet you’ve been told something similar.

So my question for you now, is How’s that working out for you?

Really.

As we say here in the South, How you doing?

Do you still believe that?
