Well that was quick. Despite the Roseanne revival being a massive ratings goldmine for the network, ABC announced today the series has been canceled, following a racially-tinged tweet from its star mere hours earlier about former Obama staffer Valerie Jarrett.
Responding to a tweet alleging misconduct by the former White House advisor, Roseanne originally posted: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj”
That…did not go over well.
In a public statement, ABC announced:
Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.
The new version of the series had already caused much consternation for the unexpected re-branding of the lead character as an unapologetic red-hat-MAGA-type, vocally supporting Trump in the face of her more liberal family members, including Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie and Sara Gilbert’s Darlene. But critics had particularly zeroed in on perceived racial undertones in some of the humor, such as an eyebrow-raising barb at fellow ABC series “Black-ish” and “Fresh off the Boat”.
Shortly after the controversial comment this morning, Ms. Barr tweeted an apology and a statement that she would be leaving Twitter. No word of her Twitter status now that she’s lost her show. I’m betting she won’t be keeping her opinions to herself.
