A recent study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology produced some eye-opening, though not surprising, results. According to the study, people who are skeptical of climate change take more individual actions to help the environment than climate change alarmists. These actions include things such as “recycling, using public transportation, buying ‘green’ products, and using reusable shopping bags.”
It seems that several things are at work here. First, skeptics are more typically conservative, and conservatives value individual responsibility over government regulation to solve problems. In this study, the participants were also asked about their views on climate change policy, and the skeptics predictably were against any government policy to address climate change.
On the other hand, alarmists are more typically liberal, and liberals value government regulation and collective action over individual responsibility to solve problems. The alarmists in the study took individual actions less often, and they expressed their support for government policies to address climate change.
For skeptics, this lack of individual action while supporting government interventionist policies seems hypocritical. If alarmists like Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio actually took individual actions that showed their great care for the environment, not only would they be more convincing, they would do far more to positively impact the environment than what their words accomplish.
As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Most skeptics actually do care for the planet, despite what the left wants you to believe. They just think that the “solutions” that the alarmists are pushing are too far overreaching, and would serve only to grow government at the expense of individual liberty without producing many realistic results. Instead, they quietly do little things to make a difference, things that the alarmists don’t seem to want to be bothered to do. Alarmists would rather scream about how the government MUST act to save the planet RIGHT NOW or we will face Armageddon, while doing next to nothing on a personal level to make any difference.
Mother Theresa said “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” The small things that skeptics do more than alarmists tangibly show their love for the planet. The alarmists seem to prefer talking about having the government take drastic actions so they will be able to feel like it was they who did great things to save the planet. But while they say that they love the planet, all of that talk without action doesn’t look very much like love.
