Cambridge Analytica Seeks to Fade Away

Cambridge Analytica is closing, but the investigations remain

The data team most closely related to President’s Trump 2016 campaign, Cambridge Analytica, has shuttered all of its offices. The company has already filed for “insolvency” in the U.K. and will, according to a press release, soon file for bankruptcy in the United States.

That same press release states:

Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the Company’s efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas.

Derided as something of a non-entity by some political insiders during the 2016 campaign, Cambridge Analytica became a household name earlier this year when it was revealed that the firm may have misused data collected from a third-party Facebook application. The firm’s role, specifically on social media platforms, in both the Brexit and US Presidential elections is being closely scrutinized. Given those investigations, it is not surprising that the firm has found it difficult to attract new clients.

The notoriety the firm has attracted made today’s news expected by employees and other political consultants. Look for noted backers, including Rebekah Mercer, and top employees to join other data collection or management firms in the near future.
